6. Station: Die Notabeln (Deutsch)

6. I notabili (Italiano)

6th station (English)

The Notables

After the departure of the monks in 1536, the inhabitants of L’Abbaye took their fate into their own hands. They appointed notables as officials. A provisional council was formed, which was officially installed when the community was founded in 1571.

From now on, they would go their own way. However, only in relative independence, since Their Excellencies of Bern were careful that no important decision escaped their control. Thus, one not only bowed to their wishes, but also included their own emblem, the bear, in the municipal coat of arms!

Meetings were held in the church for a long time. However, it was considered being important separating the spiritual from the temporal. For this purpose, a private house was bought in 1649 in order to transform it into a town hall.

From then on, this was the administrative center of the village and remained so until 1969, when the new town hall was built. It is the seat of the administration and its executive with five officers.
